It was said to me a couple of weeks ago that it would be good to get out of the contentious issues of Genesis next week. I agreed, but the more I think about it, all of Genesis is contentious in some peoples eyes.

We have dealt with creation, worship, original sin, being mad in the image of God, sin as a concept, God’s purpose, and hey these are big issues right now as well as when the book of Genesis was written.

This is an bit amazing. One of the first issues in the bible is what is right worship. Can you believe it, it is still going on. Actually, this one topic has been one of the few contentious issues in this church since we have been here. Just recently the organ over guitars and piano debate has continued. Last month some issues over different styles of music. February some active debate regarding the raising of hands in church. It’s been going on for 10, 000 years and you expect me to sought it out for you.

A question for you. Do you really believe this story, the story in the bible about sin? Was there really an Adam and Eve?? Is this how sin really came about? Or was the Adam and Eve story really just a metaphor for bad things and bad conscious? Well, what do you reckon? Myth, truth, metaphor, analogy?

1JN 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

2:1 As John resumes his discourse on sin and forgiveness, we see a striking change of mood. Whereas earlier he was focusing on his opponents and their false teaching, now he speaks about these things as they affect his followers. The note of endearment–”my dear children”–in no way minimizes the seriousness of the discussion. John hastens to add, “I write this to you so that you will not sin.” There is no question at all in his mind that sin and obedience to God are irreconcilable. Sin is the enemy.
